Those looking to teach at the postsecondary level or engage in high-level research will typically need a doctorate to do so.

Searching for the right doctoral program opens up a world of confusing and complex options for aspiring learners. This guide cuts through the noise and provides a solid overview of what future online doctoral students can expect.

Methodology

To find the best colleges of 2016-17 for earning an online doctoral degree, our researchers and higher education experts collected and analyzed data from every accredited postsecondary institution in the United States. The goal? To see which colleges offered the most notable balances of academic rigor, program availability, student support and affordability for online learning. The specific criteria and scoring metrics for the ranking are as follows:

  • Accredited, 4-year public or private not-for-profit institution
  • Must offer at least 1 online doctoral degree program
  • Annual in-state tuition & fees below $25,000
  • In-state tuition & fees for graduate students
  • Count of online doctoral degree programs available
  • Student-to-faculty ratio
  • Availability of academic/career counseling services
  • Availability of job placement services
  • 3-year loan default rate
  • AC Online Peer-Based Value (PBV)*

*PBV: is a proprietary metric that compares the cost of a program to the cost of other programs with the same (or a similar) qualitative score. It also compares the qualitative score of the program to the score of other programs with the same (or similar) cost. In short, the PBV calculation denotes the overall value – or “bang for your buck” – of an online degree.

What Are the Most Popular Doctoral Degrees to Earn Online?

Many students seek out on an online doctoral degree to continue their education without leaving a current job. In a field like education, employers may require a doctorate to take on certain leadership roles, such as superintendent or associate dean. In finance or economics, a doctorate may instead help you negotiate a promotion or higher salary.

While you can earn all of these degrees entirely at a distance, some programs may also allow you to take some of your courses on-campus in a hybrid learning format. Read on for five of the most popular online doctorates.

Major Description
Accounting and Finance Doctoral students majoring in accounting and finance learn about advanced topics such as global economics, quantitative analysis, and forensic accounting. Students focused on practice may take on executive roles after graduation, while those who conduct original research during their doctoral studies may instead hope to work in academia.
Education A Ph.D. program in education may feature courses such as educational law, designing curricula for diverse learners, or teacher supervision. Graduates of these programs often take on high-level administrative roles, including superintendent and chief academic officer, though others may plan to train the next generation of educators as professors at a college or university.
Business and Economics Students who pursue a Ph.D. in business or economics often work in research, whether at a university or for a government agency. To prepare for these roles, students receive in-depth training in quantitative and qualitative analysis, as well as advanced business research methods.

How Long Does It Take to Earn a Doctoral Degree Online?

Most students should expect to take a minimum of two years getting their doctorate, although depending on the degree, some learners stretch the program to seven years or more. Given the self-paced nature of online learning, most online programs have time limits for completion to prevent students from taking close to a decade to complete their doctoral degrees.

The exact limit varies based on the area of study and specific school, but students can expect to have a 7-9 year deadline from the first class to dissertation completion. The dissertation often slows students down, as a result of the individually paced timeline for the degree. Given these points, it can prove difficult to predict exactly how long it takes to get a doctoral degree. Therefore, the following timeline will focus on a typical schedule for students working toward a Ph.D.

Application Process

Each school determines distinct admission requirements for doctorates, but most students should expect to provide prior academic transcripts, a resume or curriculum vitae, a portfolio of work or research, letters of recommendation and proof of a degree in the same (or related) field as the doctorate program.

Year One

The first year of study consists primarily of classes and exams. First-year courses will explore the required curriculum plus any specialized areas chosen by the student, often concluding with comprehensive exams to demonstrate mastery of the knowledge.

Year Two

Year two shares many similarities with year one. However, during this second year, students may begin fulfilling their teaching requirements as a teaching assistant.

Year Three

During the third year, students complete required coursework and take the last of the necessary exams. Additionally, they may continue exploring teaching requirements. Toward the end of the third year, students must request admittance to degree candidacy. The real work for the Ph.D. begins when a learner begins on their dissertation.

Year Four

The dissertation should be in full swing by the fourth year. By now, the student has chosen an original topic. The student will also prepare a dissertation prospectus, outlining the dissertation by providing a thesis, research plan, and methodology.

Upon completing their prospectus, learners may have to complete the prospectus colloquium, wherein they present and defend their theses to a department advisory committee, as well as other students or professors. Assuming the student’s defense proves successful, they can begin the dissertation itself.

Years Five, Six and Seven

The student will conduct the necessary research and then write their dissertation. A faculty adviser supervises the entire process, and upon meeting the stated requirements, the student will have to defend the dissertation to an advisory board. Following a successful defense, the student receives a Ph.D.

Are Online Doctoral Degrees Cheaper?

Online doctoral programs usually share comparable prices with traditional, on-campus programs. Some unique differences remain between online and on-campus programs that can often make the online route cheaper.

Average Published Yearly Tuition and Fees for Graduate Programs – 2016

Public Institutions Private Nonprofit Private For-profit
$11,303 $25,817 $14,432

Source: National Center for Education Statistics

Tuition Rate

Each school treats its online tuition rates differently. Some doctoral students can expect to pay the in-state rate. Others may pay a special rate that all online students pay, lower than the out-of-state rate but higher than in-state. At other schools, online students will pay the same tuition rate as all other doctoral students pay.

Travel Costs

All doctoral degrees require the preparation and defense of a dissertation. At many schools, doctoral students should expect to travel to campus at least once or twice to complete the dissertation requirements. Depending on a student’s distance from the school, these travel costs can be minimal or fairly significant.

Online students avoid all other commuting costs. Bypassing the need for gas or public transportation can add up to major savings throughout the several years it takes to receive a doctorate.

Personal Computing

All online students need access to a personal computer and broadband internet access. After all, the computer and internet remain the only way a student can learn the material and complete the curriculum requirements. Many doctoral students will already possess a personal computer and internet access, but those who do not must budget for these costs.

School Technology Fee

Certain universities charge students taking online courses a specific technology fee. The amount and payment methods will depend on the school. In some instances, technology accounts for a nominal fee every semester. In other cases, these fees can exceed $100 per course.

Housing and Moving Costs

By attending classes online, students no longer need to make a move to their new school. Without the need to pay for moving costs or additional housing expenses, learners can save a bundle in working toward their doctorate. If the student already has a full-time job before enrolling, they are more likely to keep it.

Work While in School

Speaking of work, possessing the ability to attend classes remotely makes it much easier to maintain a full-time job while in school. Most graduate programs recognize that many doctoral students intend to continue working while enrolled. This ability to work and study at the same time can provide the means for financial support and largely offset the cost of attending an online program while concurrently developing professional skills.

Can You Get Financial Aid for Online Doctoral Programs?

Online programs have reached widespread acceptance within the context of financial assistance, so attending school online will make no difference concerning a doctoral student’s ability to receive aid. Therefore, any doctoral student interested in applying for financial aid awards should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

You can find more information about federal offerings, such as subsidized loans and grants, at the Federal Student Aid website. The FAFSA also proves necessary for the vast majority of state-based and school-specific financial aid awards. If the student only plans on receiving financial aid from their chosen schools, they will probably still need to complete the FAFSA. Some private scholarships sponsored by charitable organizations and companies may also require this application.

Students must attend an accredited school to qualify for financial aid. This important from a professional perspective, as most employers won’t hire graduates from non-accredited schools. Most financial aid, including private scholarships and grants, remains exclusively available to students who attend accredited schools and programs.

Second, doctoral students should focus on different types of financial aid than undergraduate students do. For example, many types of state and federal aid remain available solely for undergraduate students. The increase in many assistantships and fellowships, which prove more common for graduate students at the doctoral level, offset the lack of opportunities for certain types of publicly-funded aid.

Types of Financial Aid Available for Online Master’s Students

Scholarships

Private organizations award scholarships based on factors such as financial need, academic achievement, community service, and professional aspirations. You do not need to pay back any of your scholarship money, though you may need to meet certain requirements to receive additional funding in subsequent years. Scholarship amounts vary greatly, from awards totaling only a few hundred dollars to those that cover the entire cost of your education.

Grants

Generally speaking, government agencies provide grants based almost exclusively on financial need. Completing the FAFSA can help determine your eligibility for government grants. Most state and federal grant programs, however, prioritize students pursuing an undergraduate degree, so you may need to seek out other sources of funding to help finance your master’s or doctoral education.

Work-Study

After completing the FAFSA, the federal government may determine that you qualify for a work-study position. These part-time jobs, usually located on or near your school’s campus, can help you earn money to defray the cost of tuition, room and board, and books. All work-study participants earn at least their state’s minimum wage, and you do not need to pay back any of your earnings.

Loans

Student loans allow you to pay for your education over an extended period. Government loans usually feature low interest rates and the possibility of forgiveness, while private student loans may come with higher rates and stricter repayment terms. Consider private loans your final option when researching ways to pay for your degree.

Fellowships

Especially at the master’s and doctoral level, individual schools often provide fellowships to attract talented or underrepresented students. Fellowships typically function much like scholarships, though some programs may require recipients to teach, assist a faculty member with their research, or perform some kind of administrative duty to receive funding.

How Can I Find the Best Online Doctoral Programs?

Finding the best doctoral program proves difficult, as many students have varying goals and criteria for attending a specific institution. For instance, learners looking for closer attention from their professors may prefer a private school with smaller student-to-faculty ratios, but this added attention often comes at a higher cost. While one student may prioritize affordability, others may have more specific benchmarks in mind. We considered these variances and ranked the schools by considering a variety of factors students use to compare and choose universities.
